and slowly uncovering more info about it all was really interesting.īut yeah. The world building and underlying narratives of voidouts, timefall and Beaches, etc. I felt like the gameplay was really fresh and tried to experiment with the standard AAA format. Then all you can do is retreat to safety and wait it out.Īs I say, I haven't finished the story yet, but the symbolism is so heavy handed that I'd be surprised if I'm far off the mark. ![]() Sometimes it can feel like you've gotten past the worst of it-the sun is shining and the world is bright-only for a new storm of grief to come on suddenly. You are constantly haunted by the conspicuous void left behind by the one you lost. Everything feels distant, impermanent, and empty. It's about how, when you experience a significant loss, it can feel like your whole world is destroyed. I haven't played very far through the game yet, but from what I've seen, I'd say it's a story about grief and loss. It's not for everyone, but when done well, it makes for some of my absolute favorite stories (like EEAAO). It's a way of taking the thoughts and emotions of the main character and making them concrete and visible. They are an externalization of the main character's internal world. The plot and setting aren't supposed to be logical or realistic. It's a highly metaphorical style of storytelling, similar to works like Neon Genesis: Evangelion and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. Is Kojima's bar of incoherence already so low that people are conditioned to see this as good? Is it because people grade videogames on a curve compared to other media? Was I supposed to interpret all the stuff that didn't make any sense as a tongue in cheek joke? This was my first Kojima game, and the first long game I've finished in years, so I've been away from games for a bit. I just don't get how anyone could have left this game with the conclusion that it was an awesome story as I read in many reviews. The idea of connecting to other players is cool, and I am one of the people who enjoyed building out the map with ziplines. I actually really enjoyed the core gameplay of navigating the terrain. I feel like a lot of people don't like Death Stranding because of the gameplay. Long drawn out cutscenes that could have built emotional connection to the player are instead used to explain the scifi logic of a world where that same logic is inconsistent and often broken. The voice acting and production values are through the roof. The Death Stranding, Voidouts and timefall are all such interesting concepts. It all felt like such a shame because I actually thought like some core parts of the setting were interesting. I'm Die Hardman, the executive of the entire country now but I'll also be your dispatcher!" And you need to do it by delivering packages. And we need to pass on the Presidency to your sister because that's how America works. ![]() Oh and by the way the President is your mom. You're here in the oval office for some reason with a guy named Die Hardman and the President. "Sam, you're the best delivery man in America. But the solution to this is simple: Just set the game somewhere else!)įor anyone who hasn't played, I think the opening cutscene is emblematic of the game and it only gets less coherent from there: I understand the reason is because of the limitations of gameplay and technology. Uncanny sense of scale (why is the game set in "America" but looks nothing like it, and is approximately 1/1000 of the size, yet I am constantly being shown where in "America" I am on a map. No one acts logically, every character only exists for the player. Odd and disagreeable American patriotic undertones. Characters have silly immersion breaking names. Every cutscene is heavy handed exposition. Terrible pacing, atrocious writing, nonsense plot. ![]() It felt like I was watching a Neil Breen or Tommy Wiseau movie at points. I think it had possibly the least coherent story of any media I have ever consumed.
